Sore muscles are sadly a part of life.

Whether it’s from a tough workout, a long day on your feet, picking up your kids (or their bicycle) and carrying them for 5 blocks we all feel the effects of daily tension.

While there are plenty of store-bought solutions, there’s something grounding about making your own muscle balm—especially one infused with CBD.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound derived from hemp that interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system to help regulate pain, inflammation, and muscle recovery.

When used topically, CBD works locally by binding to receptors in the skin and muscles—making it a great ingredient in a natural, soothing balm.

In this post, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to create a custom CBD balm at home, using simple, skin-loving ingredients that actually support recovery and ease soreness naturally.

Why Make Your Own CBD Muscle Balm?

Creating your own CBD balm puts you in control of the ingredients, strength, and scent.

Many commercial products contain additives, preservatives, or synthetic fragrances that can easily irritate sensitive skin.

A homemade balm gives you a clean, customizable alternative that works with your body—not against it.

Plus, it’s surprisingly easy. With the right ingredients and a bit of patience, you can craft a high-quality, effective balm tailored to your needs—whether you want a light formula for daily use or a stronger blend for post-exercise recovery.

What You’ll Need

Here’s a list of ingredients and supplies for a 4-ounce batch. Most can be found online or at health food stores.

Core Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (carrier oil that moisturizes and helps CBD absorb)
  • 1/4 cup beeswax pellets (thickens the balm and gives it a solid texture)
  • 2 tablespoons shea butter or cocoa butter (adds richness and nourishment)
  • 200–400 mg CBD oil or concentrate (full-spectrum or broad-spectrum preferred)
  • Optional: 10–20 drops essential oils (like peppermint, eucalyptus, or lavender)

Tools:

  • Double boiler or heat-safe glass bowl and saucepan
  • Measuring spoons/cups
  • Small whisk or spoon
  • Glass jars or tins for storage (2 oz or 4 oz work well)

Step-by-Step: How to Make CBD Muscle Balm

Step 1: Set Up Your Double Boiler

Fill a small saucepan with 1–2 inches of water and place it over low heat. Set a heat-safe glass bowl on top (or use a double boiler if you have one). This gentle heating method prevents your oils from burning or losing potency.

Step 2: Melt the Base

Add the coconut oil, beeswax pellets, and shea butter to the bowl. Stir occasionally until everything is fully melted and blended—this should take about 5–10 minutes. Keep the temperature low to preserve the quality of the oils.

Step 3: Remove from Heat and Add CBD

Once melted, remove the bowl from heat. Let it cool for about 1 minute before adding your CBD oil. Stir gently but thoroughly to evenly distribute the CBD throughout the mixture.

Note: Avoid overheating the CBD—excess heat can degrade its active compounds. That’s why you always add it after removing from direct heat.

Step 4: Add Essential Oils (Optional)

Now’s the time to add your essential oils. For sore muscles, we recommend:

  • Peppermint oil (cooling and energizing)
  • Eucalyptus oil (clarifying and anti-inflammatory)
  • Lavender oil (calming and relaxing)
Start with 10–15 drops total, then adjust to your preference. Stir again.

Step 5: Pour Into Containers

Carefully pour the warm liquid into clean glass jars or tins. Wipe the rims with a paper towel to keep them clean, and let the balm sit at room temperature until fully solid—usually about 1–2 hours.

Once firm, place lids on your containers and store in a cool, dark place. Your balm should last up to six months.

How to Use Your CBD Muscle Balm

Scoop out a small amount with clean fingers and massage into sore or tense areas. Focus on the shoulders, neck, lower back, calves, or wherever you hold tightness.

You can use this balm:

  • Post-workout to reduce recovery time
  • After long workdays to ease neck and back tension
  • Before bed to help your body relax and unwind
  • After a warm shower or bath to lock in hydration and increase absorption

CBD balms are best used consistently. The effects build over time, especially when paired with movement, hydration, and rest.

Tips for Customization

  • Want a firmer balm? Add more beeswax (try 1/3 cup).
  • Prefer a softer texture? Reduce beeswax slightly and increase coconut oil.
  • Sensitive skin? Use unscented versions of all ingredients and skip essential oils.
  • Want more potency? Increase the amount of CBD concentrate—up to 500mg for targeted pain relief. Just adjust your total volume to keep proportions balanced.

CBD muscle balms are one of the easiest, most rewarding natural remedies to make at home. They’re gentle on your skin, free from harsh additives, and designed to work with your body’s natural healing systems. Whether you’re an athlete, a parent, or someone managing chronic discomfort, this balm gives you a reliable, nourishing tool to help ease the load.

Making it yourself is more than a DIY project—it’s a form of care. And with just a few core ingredients, you can have a high-quality, CBD-infused balm ready to go whenever tension or soreness shows up.
